The Bassoon
The bassoon is a mysterious and comical instrument.
It is a member of the double reed family. Nearly
8 feet long, it doubles back on itself so that
it stands only about 5 feet heigh. Bassoonists always
wear seatbelts to lift the instrument off the ground
while playing.
Some of the most famous bassoon passages are the
Grandfather in "Peter and the Wolf" and the opening
passage of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring."
Natalie Merchant had two bassoonists in her band
Ten Thousand Maniacs!!
